Assignment Instructions
You have been assigned to solve two real world composite designs and manufacture problems. The project briefs can be found below. You will discuss, investigating and proposing a solution for each problem.
You need to prepare two written reports, one for each problem. Each report should be between 3000 and 3300 words long and should consist of:
Project 1:
Your employer has suggested that you make aircraft seat backs using polyester sheet moulding compound (SMC) reinforced with glass-fibre for a luxury business jet. These will be pressed to shape and require minimal machining once removed from the mould. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this approach, and propose an alternative manufacturing route and materials for this artefact.
Project 2:
Your employer has suggested that you make a wing for a large civil aircraft using a pultruded glass-reinforced polyester beam as the main spar. This will be covered with a skin of carbon-fibre reinforced epoxy composite that will be wet-laid in to open moulds. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this approach, and propose an alternative manufacturing route and materials for this artefact.
