Listen to Me First Week Five Transcript

Speakers: Host, Del

HOST Welcome to this week's podcast. This week, we'll be discussing promoting change and personal theory. Can you tell us a little bit about how you formed your personal theory of intervention for promoting change?

DEL You bet. You know, I always encourage students to kind of take a look at what fits best for them. So, for me, I really like the idea of cognitive behavioral therapy. That seemed to really fit with the population that I was working with and I think it just depends on what fits best for you as a person and that really is sort of the way that I approached things.

HOST Has your theory been consistent over the years or has it evolved?

DEL You know, it's definitely evolved. As I said earlier, you know, I was really sort of a big fan of cognitive behavioral therapy. I thought that if we can implement the two of those things, we can change behaviors. And I was working with adolescents at the time so it worked incredibly well.

But now, as I have more experience and take a look at things a bit differently, I tend to use cognitive behavioral therapy in connection with lots of theories. I specifically now like systems theory and the idea that we have to look at a person in terms of their whole environment.

HOST What are the most important elements students should remember for this class as they go back to work in the field?

DEL You know, number one, I think is to kind of take a look at a theory that fits best for them, but at the same time, I think that they need to consider sort of that model that works best with their population. So, you know, I guess for me it is always incorporating the systems theory that we're impacted by all of those things that are around us, but then take a look at the environment and then take a look at the population and ask those professionals that are around them about the theory that they use, and then perhaps implement that into their work.

HOST Consider these concepts as you read your materials, complete your assignments, and answer this week's discussion questions. Follow up with your instructor if you have any questions.
