This week I chose to read To standout or to conform: Stereotypes and meta-stereotypes as barriers in the transition to sustainable diets by Lara H. Wehbe, Sophie Duncan, Kasia Banas, and Esther K. Papies. In summary, this article speaks to the barriers that are set to people who are attempting to make dietary changes as a result of the stereotypes created around vegans. The article explains that there is much more to a vegan diet than just improving your health. It speaks to the affect it has on climate change as well. However, the lack of social acceptance and stereotypes of practicing a vegan diet has deterred people from committing to the change full time. These stereotypes include being extremist or virtuous. (Wehbe et al, 2024).
This article relates to this weeks theme because it highlights the direct impacts that stereotypes can have on a certain population. Even though there are so many benefits for both your physical health and environmental health, these stereotypes are preventing people from make healthy changes. This is a prime example of how negative stereotypes can have a negative impact. On the other side, there is still a large portion of the population who look at the positive stereotypes of going vegan and commit to the dietary changes. I suppose this is where the meta-stereotypes come in to play and affect the people who care about what other people think about them.
With the growing popularity of plant-based diets, there certainly has been a culture created around this sort of living. It is accepted, believed, and practiced by many people and the stereotypes surrounding it all can have a lasting affect that many people might not see.
