Myxedema is another name for hypothyroidism, and includes a mixture of symptoms including rapid unexplained weight gain, fatigue, and even hair loss. Grave's disease is a type of autoimmune hyperthyroidism. Oxytocin and ADH are produced by the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior pituitary (the adenohypophysis), while Prolactin is a hormone that is released by the anterior pituitary (the neurohypophysis). The hypothalamus controls the release of these hormones through both the portal system (for the anterior pituitary) and the hypothalamohypophyseal tract (for the posterior pituitary). Aldosterone is produced by the adrenal glands, and insulin is produced by the pancreas. The thyroid controls the basal metabolic rate of the body (anabolic and catabolic activities), while the thymus serves a very important role in immunity.
