Client Scenario
Tom is a young Aboriginal man (17) who for the last few years has been living in a range of different accommodation settings in Newman: i.e. rough sleeping, staying with friends and moving between his mum and uncle's homes. He and most of his close friends are unemployed and have been involved in petty crime to help support themselves. There is a high level of youth unemployment (up to 20%) and alcohol and drug use in town.
Tom has been feeling depressed for the last year and has thought about suicide. He has also been drinking alcohol heavily. Tom and his friend Ian came to Perth to stay with Tom's relatives but were arrested for drunk and disorderly behaviour and now have to face the court here. Ian's family emigrated from the UK and he has no supports in Perth and is relying on Tom. Tom is short of money, as he didn't let Centrelink know of his move to the city. His extended family supports are offering Tom and Ian to stay at least until the court date in 3 weeks but after that housing is much less certain. He is worried about being imprisoned as he has several prior convictions but even if the court only fines him he knows he cannot afford to pay it. Tom is despondent about the future, he wants to get work but has had little success so far in this. His school results were quite good but he got bored fast and was absent a great deal in the last few years of school which hasn't helped him with getting into courses or apprenticeships - he didn't feel the employment service he was referred was really much help to him - there were just no jobs and no future. He looks tired and says he is desperate. Tom is very stressed by the idea of handling this current situation without the support of his mum and uncle. In the past they have come to court with him and helped him get legal advice and get through the process.
