The Sphere in Annihilation

John Moore asserted that the science fiction trope of the absent alien become a means for bringing into focus the alienations which structure everyday life... the Visitation in Roadside Picnic, Stalker, and Annihilation remain veiled in mystery especially for the object(s) left behind from the alien visitation. In the Zone(s) the laws of thermodynamics, the laws that govern biology, and various effects and conditions can kill or main or even transform making them dangerous to enter. Of all the objects found in the book and the films, including Annihilation, the Golden Ball, The Room, and the Sphere are of particular interest. In Roadside Picnic and in Stalker, the Golden Ball and The Room, respectively are wish fulfillment objects which require no articulation of desire because the Zone is a symbol of the unconscious and has immediate access to any individual's subconscious wishes.
