QUESTION 4

TEXT COMMENT "Roadmap for recovery" The volatile world economy and subsequent decline in business and consumer confidence has taken its toll on the tourism and travel industry. As an integral part of the global economy, international tourism demand has slowed significantly

However, tourism means jobs, trade and development and is a primary economic stimulus. In addition, the industry is well positioned to lead the transformation to a Green Economy

In light of the current economic crisis and tourism's potential to contribute to economic recovery and the Green New Deal, UNWTO has elaborated a Roadmap for Recovery, a set of guidelines to see the tourism industry through the economic crisis

The Roadmap highlights that tourism is a highly resilient sector, advocates tourism's priority inclusion in general economic stimulation measures and calls for advancing tourism in the new Green Economy. Tourism's potential to put the world back on the road to economic recovery and tackle the long-term challenges of job creation, poverty alleviation and climate change must not be underestimated in these challenging times

Diversity is one of the driving forces behind tourism and can allow all nations to share the numerous benefits brought about by building stronger ties with other countries. As such, tourism is an undisputed catalyst for building understanding, fostering social inclusion and promoting higher standards of living

Globalization must be understood as a means to improve economic collaboration and international understanding, but not at the cost of diluting the rich cultural diversity present in our world; in this respect, travel and tourism can and must play a key role. Tourism shares the social responsibility of promoting the positive aspects of globalization and as such must direct these global networks towards balanced and sustainable development

Excerpt from Magazine of the World Tourism Organisation n° 3/2009

Using the text above, discuss the importance and responsibility of tourism in the new green economy and its role in poverty alleviation
