Communication between clinicians working together is essential in providing an integrated patient centered approach, in order to deliver the best care and outcomes for our patients. The idea of an electronic health record (EHR) has been around since the first PC hit the market (Reid, 2010, p. 24). An EHR system converts paper health files and interventions into a digital form, which allows other health professionals to access the recorded information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (O'Sullivan, Billing, & Stokes, 2011). At this very moment, healthcare professionals are wasting time using inefficient and outdated systems.
This paper will discuss a standardized EHR messenger software application of the future that will give healthcare professionals their time back. This instant messaging will include tools that facilitate communication and collaboration within multi-disciplinary teams, which has been a challenge for many years. The impact to client care associated with this messaging service will be explored, such as how it will improve the quality of care, and strengthen patient safety. Successful integration of this technology into nursing practice will also be addressed, amongst the type of training that will be required to use this technology correctly.
