Managed care organizations sought to minimize the negative impact of moral hazard by engineering reimbursement models that forced physicians to assume some risk for their patients' outcomes. The backlash against managed care in the 1990's temporarily delayed further development of risk-sharing models in healthcare; however almost all new revenue and delivery models now include provider risk sharing in some form. The relatively new concept of high deductible health plans (HDHP) represents a formidable attempt to manage moral hazard by attempting to achieve patient risk-sharing. In other words, HDHPs attempt to give patients a financial "stake" in the cost of their own care.
