Problem: News Media Press Brief Essay

Create and present a press brief (in a video no more than 5 minutes long) as if you are a Public Information Officer during a disaster. This brief should provide important and pertinent information concerning your disaster.

You will need to research a disaster incident or an emerging disaster (any disaster is fine) and then present the information. This may require a certain amount of research to gather factual data and a little creativity to fill in the blanks of your disaster. If you have never seen a press brief, here are a few examples:

An effective press brief will summarize the initial event, provide current situational reports that identify emerging issues, describe expectations for the community, identify any special needs, identify safety hazards for the responders, determine the best communication plan and logistic issues, and address any outstanding issues needing attention in the immediate future.

The intent of this exercise is for the student to practice real world skills through the role playing of actual events.
