Thought Stance Assignment: Thought Stances are an assessment tool used to encourage systematic study, to improve content retention, and to provide a forum for capturing your thoughts and reflections for each lesson and topic. These "weekly writings" are a tool to assist with my assessment of your comprehension of the course objectives and reading materials, as well as an instrument to improve your analytical writing skills.
A. During the semester, you will have several Thought Stance opportunities in which you will write the appropriate, analytical "thought stance." Each should include the following elements-follow the template examples exactly:
• Citationof the TED Talk, to include Title, Speaker, Date, & Length of Video
• Select three (3) ideas or comments presented by the TED TALK speakers that you found interesting, significant, or controversial from the video. Your three passages should be not more than 2-3 sentences maximum. The three passages should be verbatim, not paraphrased (using the video transcript will be helpful for this part). I also highly recommend that you type-out (versus cut/paste) each passage to better retain the material. Note: you don't need one of each, as "or" is the operative word, but three passages total are required.
• REFLECTIONS (i.e. your thoughts) section: Take 20-30 minutes to reflect and either answer "what did I learn from this speaker?" or comment on why you selected your particular passages, or simply record your thoughts about the speaker's topic. This is where we capture your initial reaction to the lesson material. I am looking for 250-350 words in this section.
• Thought Stances should be No Longer than one (1) page and you are expected to include the Word Count for your Reflections section, as indicated in the template example.
B. Once completed, submit in the appropriate Canvas section. "Thought Stances" will be read, assessed, and graded by your professor based on your level of input in relating relevant concepts/ideas from the course into your Reflections essay portion. No Late ones will be accepted-so please plan accordingly.
• Reviewing any video not on the list of choices will greatly diminish your grade for that Thought Stance.
C. I have included a few example templates of the proper format on the Though Stances Guidance & Instructions page for your reference. I want this exact format, e.g., submissions without a Word Count will not receive full credit for the assignment. Be precise.
Explore the following videos:
• "3 ways to lower the barriers to higher education" (13m:11s) (Haugabrook, Adrian K.)
• "The benefits of music education" (17m:33s) (Collins, Anita)
• "How the US medical community fails Black mothers" (14m:58s) (Irving, Wanda)
• "How doctors can help fix the broken US asylum system" (16m:29s) (Shin, Joseph) Instructions
To further assist you, here are a few suggested hints which will steer you in the right direction when writing your Thought Stance:
1. Follow the Thought Stance template exactly. I can not stress this enough. The Thought Stance paper should be no more than one-page in length. The main purpose of this is to give you practice in writing succinctly and using concise words and thoughts. You should use the examples (templates) provided as guidance.
2. You only need to select one of the pre-selected TED Talks speeches presented for that week's analysis-your choice. However, do not choose your own, as these have been selected by your professor to support specific topics and course objectives.
3. In selecting your three passages from the speech to discuss, you should include the speaker's comment exactly as presented (as a quote). This may be accomplished by using the "Interactive Transcript" found on the TED Talks site for each of the selected speeches. Select the link provided and it will take you to the speech transcript. You may cut and paste from the site; however, I highly recommend you re-type the passage into your paper as it will help with the retention of the information.
4. When choosing your selected passages, you only need three in total. For example, you might find three "interesting" comments given by the speaker to analyze or you may choose to analyze one "interesting" comment, one comment you found "controversial" and one comment you found "significant."
5. The Reflections section is the most important element of the Thought Stance paper. Follow the instructions provided and stay within the Word Count requirement. The Word Count requirement (250-350 words) is for the Reflections section only and should not include the total for the whole paper.
6. For these papers, you will utilize the 1st person point of view in your analysis (Reflections section). In other words, you should use phrases such as "I agree with the speaker in that..."; "Although I found this passage to be controversial, I don't disagree with the statement because..."; or "I found this statement to be significant because...."
7. Importantly, I will be looking for your comprehension and use of the course materials in your analysis.
8. Ensure you include the citation for the source you are analyzing.
