Scenario: You (Nurse A) are just starting another busy evening in your emergency department when Sally Johnson arrives with a female companion. Both look a little "rough around the edges"-clothes worn and a bit dirty. Sally is short-of-breath and staggers toward reception. Nurse A whispers to the physician: "I remember her- she was in last week. It was freezing cold day and she didn't even have a coat on. Maybe she was just looking for a warm place to sleep, maybe she was high on something. I'm not sure. She left before we could ask many questions". Physician to Sally: What are you on Sally? Sally to partner:(voice slurred) "I told you there was no point of coming here. They just think Im on something" Sally's partner: "She's not on anything. Her heart is racing! The physician rolls her eyes a bit: "Right. ok, come with me" Sally's partner starts to follow them to an examining room but the physician puts up her hand to stop them."Not you- just family allowed beyond this point." Sally's partner: "But I am family! I'm her husband" The physician laughs and walks away, "Right" Nurse A starts to follow the two of them, then mutters to herself, I better double glove, you know- her lifestyle is...well, you know (giggles). You never know what she or he, I'm not sure which may have.
