Although the functions of the exocrine pancreas, liver, and gallbladder are not directly affected by celiac disease, these organs are still inextricably linked to the alimentary canal, especially the small intestine. Chronic inflammation and the loss of villi in the small intestine interrupt the normal digestive functions of these organs as well. For example, the loss of lacteals with atrophy of the mucosal villi severs the link between the small intestine and the liver, further compromising the normal physiologic pathways associated with nutrient absorption.
