Communication has changed so much over the past 20 years - from typewriters and carbon copies to e-mail, instant messaging, text, twitter, etc.... And, although these advancements bring SO many benefits, communication gets even harder with technology in the midst.

For example, in person, a teacher, or a manager, who is communicating a message, can ask clarifying questions. The instructor or manager can get non-verbal cues, such as heads nods (or glazed eyes) that alert him or her to confusion or understanding. But, in today's technology driven environment, many communications and messages are given in blogs,  via internet/intranet or over e-mail...

Also, technology enhancements that allow for conference calls and long distance video conference meetings, as well as those that allow for instant communication (i.e. Instant messenger), all can improve productivity and enhance efficiency... Right? But, do they?

This technology can also some serious negative side effects, especially in terms of the communication process.

What are the pros and cons of using technology-related tools when communicating? What about when communicating important messages or complex messages? What are the potential benefits? What about risks?
