The "Pyramid" approach to surveillance examines a condition in question over a range of sources. (See Figure 4-8: The Asthma Surveillance Pyramid: a description of California's asthma data.)

This approach can be applied to other conditions as well. Your task is to create a surveillance pyramid for gun violence in the State of Michigan.

Your task is as follows:

1) Propose three levels of the pyramid and one outside measure for a gun violence surveillance system. Each measure should include the formula that defines it. You are not limited to the formulas in the book.

2) Identify the source of data for the measure. These potential measures should come from some existing source. The "source" should include the actual data used, not just a report on the general topic. You do not need to show the data. Just establish that it is something that exists, even if it is not available to you.

3) Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each of the sources (Consider in terms of quality, representativeness, availability, etc., as we have discussed in class)
