Produce a short report on the experiment detailed in the attachment entitled "Experiment Details".  The files ending in .ods can be opened in Excel.  If you cannot open them, please let me know.  The .odt file is a Word document.

This explains the procedure of the experiment. It is probably best to print this attachment off, as it will be easier to read due to it's layout.

The attachment "Experiment Report Details" provides information on how to write a report.  The size of the report would be from 4 to 10 sides of an A4 page, including text, and any diagrams. Any information taken from a website would need to be rephrased, so it is not identical.

The paragraph below also explains a little about what happened in the experiment. It is ok to copy any of this paragraph.

"An experiment was conducted to investigate the absorption of beta particles in aluminium using a 5uCi Sr90 source and a Geigor counter detector. An aluminium slide was placed inside the lead castle between the detector and the radioactive source. The experiment began with the thinnest slide of 65 mgcm^-2. Both the thickness of the aluminium and the count rate were recorded. It was then removed and a thicker slide was again inserted in the same location in the lead castle. The same process was then repeated, and with increasingly thicker aluminium slides. The thickest measurement reaching 1590 mgcm^-2 which was achieved by inserting two slides. A graph showing the absorption curve was plotted of ln(count rate) against thickness(px)/mgcm^-2. This showed the sloping beta absorption component 'A' and the more penetrating component 'B'. As expected, the absorption of B-particles is only approximately exponential."

It should consist of,

a) A Title

b) Abstract.

This should contain the essence of the experiment. It should be short, and indicate results, as is done in a standard abstract. Perhaps one sentence stating the experiment, one sentence indicating the result, and one sentence indicating the conclusion.

The abstract should compare any value(s) obtained from the experiment, and compare with accepted value(s). Indicating if they are in agreement or not.

c) Introduction

This should be background, but the background should not be directly copied from the document I have attached entitled "Experiment Details". If taking wording from this document, the wording would need to be rephrased so it is not identical.

Relevant equations could be included here.

Relevant references could be included in the Introduction, such as references to the document entitled "Experiment Details", or references to a relevant website, or relevant book.

d) Method

Could start this by stating something such as, "The experiment was performed following the procedure described in the laboratory manual. Briefly...(then describe briefly what happened in experiment, how measurements were taken etc). A diagram could be placed here, though it would have to be referenced. If required the diagram in "Experiment Details" can be used, though this would need to be referenced as being from the laboratory manual.

e) Results

place here an smaller image of the graph which is attached. The graph attached would need a sloping line drawn on it, and the other information written on it, so that it looks similar to the diagram in the attachment "Experiment Details". The slope would need to be determined from the graph once drawn. The slope = the mass absorption coefficient in cm^-1. So, if possible, answer questions 3.8, 3.9, 3.10 here from the attached document "Experiment Details".

I am not sure, possibly the chart half way down this webpage

https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Basic_Physics_of_Nuclear_Medicine/Attenuation_of_Gamma-Rays

Maybe gives the accepted value for the mass absorption coefficient for aluminum.

Any graphs/diagrams should have a title and be numbered. Such as diagram 1, diagram2 etc. The raw data which I have shown would need to be put on a separate page, and placed in an appendix at the back of the report.

f) Analysis

Do not need to put in every calculation from the experiment. Just putting in a relevant main equation(s) and maybe information about uncertainties.

g) Conclusion

Short summary of main results and what the conclusion is from them. Like a slightly longer version of the abstract. Possibly state, "if there had been more time during the experiment it would have been good to do............." Or state, " if there had been more time it would have been good to re-check a data point which is not where it would have been expected."
