Question

This is a journal, so it is to record your thoughts and feelings, but it is also academic which makes it a sort of Scientific Journal. That means, I want to hear what you think and feel, but I also want to see you using your observations, clinical training, critical thinking, and research abilities to support your thoughts and feelings.

You will further their knowledge, awareness, and skills in working with clients from another culture by engaging in an immersion experience within a culture with which they are unfamiliar. The student will do Pre- and Post-Immersion journal entry related to this experience. Review your initial journal entry and expand on what you shared as you answer the questions below.

1. You did some reading about the culture in advance of your immersion so you could generate respectful, meaningful, and relevant questions for the people you meet. Sum up the key points about what you learned. What questions remain for you after getting the initial questions answered?

2. Share three presumptions or biases you learned you had prior to or during the immersion experience.

3. What shifted your presumptions or biases after the immersion experience?

4. What did you learn about the cultural norms of the group, particularly as it relates to your preparation to being prepared for potential cultural differences that would exist in the counseling relationship?

5. What are your expectations about how people you encountered in the immersion experience would interact with you in a therapeutic relationship?
