Assessment - Case Study and Presentation

Your Task
As a group, you will be required to review the integrity of data to ensure it is ‘fit for purpose' and then utilise data wrangling tools to appropriately visualise and analyse the data. You will then be required to prepare a short slide presentation to present your analysis to the class. This analysis and presentation is to be completed as a group in class-time during the Week 5 Workshop.

Assessment Description

Technology and analytics are disrupting the accounting, finance, and economics professions. We provide links to several case studies which illustrate the impact that a particular technology or analytics issue has had on a specific function in these professions, e.g. blockchain and security, artificial intelligence and document checking.

Assessment Instructions

To successfully complete this task, you will need to:

In your Week 5 workshop:
Form a group of three to four students
Review the share data file: Assessment 1 ASX Data - Student Version available which is available on MyKBS and ‘clean the data' using tools and techniques discussed in the previous week's workshops.
Once you are happy with the integrity of your data file, use the skills and knowledge from previous workshops to manipulate and analyse the data to answer the specific questions outlined.
Prepare a short PowerPoint slide deck addressing each of the key issues arising from your data manipulation and analysis.
Your group must then present to the class in the Week 5 workshop.

Part 1: Data Manipulation & Analysis - Preparation of Slide Deck (90 minutes class time - Week 5)

Data Cleaning
Open the Excel file "Assessment 1 ASX Data - Student Version" and review the data
contained in this file.
Using tools and techniques you have learned in your FINM4100 workshops you need to identify and "clean" any issues within the data sets.
You need to ensure that the data is appropriate for further manipulation and analysis.
While there are several data issues which you must appropriately resolve, make note of five (5) specific data points that you needed to fix. You need to discuss these in your presentation including answering the following questions:
What does data cleaning mean and why is it important
Which specific data points in the original file are you referring to?
What was the issue you identified?
What tools or techniques did you utilise to ‘clean' it?
How did this process effect your ability to analyse the data?

Data Visualisation
Once you have cleaned your data you then need to undertake some basic data visualisation and analysis using tools and techniques you have learned in your FINM4100 workshops.
Graph each companies share prices - for each of the nine (9) companies provided, graph the share price over the last 12 months.
Calculate share price performance - for each of the nine (9) companies provided, calculate the increase/decrease in the share price over the last 12 months.

Data Analysis
The companies provided represent three different industry segments of Mining (Rio Tinto, Fortescue, BHP), Banking (CBA, NAB, Westpac) and Telecommunications (Telstra, TPG, Aussie Broadband). Using tools and techniques you have learned in your FINM4100 workshops:
Compare industry performance - use tools and techniques to determine which industry (not specific individua company) performed the best.
Discuss which tool and techniques you would use to perform this analysis. No AI shortcuts — Get genuine assignment help from experienced, real tutors.
Based on your analysis make a recommendation as to which industry you would invest in including a reason as to why.
Your slide presentation format should be as follows:
Title, group names and IDs. (1 slide)
Data cleaning: Address the issues raised with respect to data cleaning issues. (2 slides)
Data visualisation: Produce and present graphs for all companies provided in this task. Calculate and present share price performance. (3 slides)

Data analysis: Utilise appropriate tools and techniques to compare industry performance. Present your analysis and recommendation. (1 slide)
Additional Information: Include any other relevant information and references. (1 slide)

Part 2: Presentation

Present your work to the class. The presentation should be no more than 8 minutes.

Not all members of the group are required to present. Those not presenting should be ready to answer questions in the Q&A section of the presentation.

Other groups will have two minutes to ask questions.
