Assignment: Intro to Comparative Politics- Media Research Report

Prepare a report based on an online article about the recent politics of a country other than the United States and Canada. The student must choose an article published after 12/31/22 by a reputable media outlet (e.g., BBC News, AP News, Reuters, Fox News, CNN, Al Jazeera, NPR). The article must discuss a topic that relates to at least one concept or theory covered in the course. Articles with more content conducive to the assignment will be those that include some critical analysis of the causes of the events covered and speculation about general patterns of political behavior. Feel free to consult with me (after class, during office hours, or by email) if you are uncertain about the appropriateness of an article due to the topic, content, or outlet.

The first page of the report should identify the concept/theory to which the central topic of the article most closely relates and then summarize what is stated in the article, highlighting the passages that are most relevant to that concept/theory. The second page of the report should comment on the article by criticizing the arguments made, expanding upon the logic to provide a more sophisticated (nuanced) understanding of what occurred, proposing an application of the logic to other political contexts, contrasting with what would have likely occurred in the American context, or some other original, thought-provoking (but relevant) reaction to the article's content. Multiple distinct reactions are allowed if there is not enough in the article to comment on with only one reaction.
