Globalization Paper: Your paper will focus on a specific example of globalization. If you recall from Week 1, globalization is the "gradual reduction of regional contrasts at the world scale, resulting from increasing international cultural, economic, and political exchanges." Globalization has become one of the most discussed areas of geography, and it is a daily news story around the world. Your first drop box assignment of the quarter had you initially look at this topic's definition: Now, you'll write a paper that focuses on a more specific topic.

Ideally, your paper should focus on something you can relate to, especially if it aligns with your academic field of study at Sullivan. This is not a requirement, but it may help to relate this paper to your career focus. You'll see from the examples below that the paper can focus on an array of topics; these examples do focus on how globalization has affected or can affect you, your family, or perhaps your community/city/state, etc.

Here are some examples that you can consider for paper topics:

1) If you work for any company that deals with other countries, then globalization has likely affected operations.

2) If you work in the food industry, you can investigate where products come from;

3) if you are involved in farming, investigate global competition.

4) If you (or other family members, friends, etc.) were ever laid off because the company you/they worked for moved to Mexico, China, or another overseas location, that is an area to consider for this paper -- this last example can also focus on how a community has been impacted either by the loss of business or the gain of business as globalization changed the businesses' operations.

5) Finally, if you are/were in the military, you can explore globalization and U.S. military efforts overseas.

Again, it doesn't have to be one of these five. If unsure if a topic is suitable, please message me through Blackboard. I would be remiss if I didn't offer up writing a paper on globalization that focuses on tariffs or the conflicts that have impacted oil. Tariffs are nothing new (neither are issues with oil), but the use of tariffs to negotiate with other countries has become a major focus for President Trump. I would stress that, like the examples above, it may be helpful to focus a paper on how the tariffs have impacted (or may impact in the future) your "industry". The impact of oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have caused worldwide prices to rise and uncertainties on when the conflicts will end (thus another possible paper topic!).

Please follow the following steps: Please write the paper in Microsoft Word if at all possible; I will accept other formats as long as I can open the attachment. Submit your paper to the globalization paper drop box beginning Monday, August 24; I will accept papers until September 6 for full credit and as late (starting on September 7 until September 11) with a one-time 10-point deduction. The paper is due by 11:59 pm, Sunday, September 6 for full credit consideration. Your grade (30% of your final grade) will be based on the following:

The paper should be at least 1,200 words; it must be at least 1,000 words to be accepted, but a 1,000-word paper will probably not receive an "A" Please don''t write much beyond 2,000 words, but I won’t count it against you if you do. I encourage you to consider using your textbook as one of your sources, but it is not required Your writing has a minimal number of grammatical, spelling, and/or punctuation errors. An "A" paper will become a "B" paper (or lower) if any of the following occur (and, your grade will drop as more and more problems with the paper occur) it is more than 1,000 words but less than 1,200 it does not have a clear thesis statement and/or example the thesis statement/example is not adequately supported by cited sources (unless there are NO sources cited, then see below*) lack of a reference page* APA format is not used for in-text citation and/or reference page you have more than a minimal number of grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors
