Brief

Prepare a correlation matrix of responses from the confidence questions on the combined pre- and mid-term class surveys.

Apply conditional formatting to create a heat-map of your correlations.

Prepare a scatterplot of the relationship between a) the pre-assessment measures of quantitative analysis confidence level and b) the mid-term assessment of quantitative analysis confidence level.

Insert the trendline, equation and r-squared.

Provide a brief interpretation of each. Submit as an MS Word Document with tables/graphs embedded (pasted as a graphic). Please follow APA Format for tables and graphs.

[Combined Pre- and Mid-Course Data will be attached. Note that the pre and mid assessment survey file is an analytic sample, and does not have the same number of observations as the previous file. All observations in this sample have a pre and post test score. You may want to run some frequencies or other descriptives on this data set before beginning other analyses to become familiar with the data.

Tutorial/Tips for you

Copy the following data to a separate tab/sheet in your workbook, or totally separate excel workbook.

Pre-assessment confidence ratings
Pre-assessment number correct on test
Post-assessment confidence ratings
Post-assessment number correct on test

Make sure they are pasted in adjacent columns on your new play worksheet. And make sure you re-name the variables (columns) so you know which are from the pre-survey and which are from the post-survey. You'll have 8 columns.

Highlight the block of data, and:

Go to analysis tools pack and use the correlation tool;
Toggle that you've highlighted column labels;
Have it put the correlation matrix on the same worksheet to the right of your data.

After it creates the correlation matrix, by hand delete the 1s on the diagonal.

Highlight the rest of the block of data and, from the "home" menu, select conditional formatting. This should make a pretty "heat map" of your correlations.

Paste that correlation matrix into a word doc and discuss: What do they mean? Which ones are high? Low? Are they in the direction you would expect? Are the high ones, ones that you'd expect to be high? What about the low ones?

Pick two columns of data that showed a high correlation in the correlation matrix and copy and paste them to a new worksheet.

Highlight the two columns and go to "insert" menu and XY scatterplot (graph of the relationship between the two).

"Right click" on one of the dots and from the menu, select "insert trendline", "equation" and "r-squared".

Be sure to label your graph appropriately (relationship between "X" and "Y") including axis labels.

Tip: The left hand column that you highlighted to make the graph will be on the "X" (horizontal axis) and right hand column on the "Y" (vertical).

Copy and paste this graph onto your word doc, and discuss: What does it mean? What does the equation indicate? What does the r-squared suggest?

2) Presentation

Presentation PowerPoint slides with tables and figures (once again it should be about Briefs 2, 3, 4, & 5 all together, while following the instructions).

Submit a presentation combining the statistical and analytic tools you have learned in this class (Briefs 2, 3, 4, and 5 after you finish them) to summarize what you believe are key points/findings of the pre- and mid-term class surveys.

Include a short slide deck with relevant tables and figures. Tables and figures in a slide deck should be sufficiently self-explanatory. Include all necessary detail, but make visual presentation clean, clear and well styled.

Your presentation should be like a full research project presentation, roughly following this outline:

Introduction/Motivation
Goals of your research (what's the primary/major question you are exploring, for example: whether student confidence levels and test performance change as students progress through an introductory course in statistics? Whether confidence levels are associated with test performance or not? And whether that changes from before to after?)

Research Questions
Specific statistical questions to be addressed (similar to above questions) including any sub-questions (subgroup comparisons)? Whether prior experience/coursework, gender, generational status matter? (by way of group comparisons) to confidence or performance?

Methods/Participants
Summary tables of the characteristics (background info) of your sample. Include summary of how many had matched data available on post vs pre-test measures.

Findings
Here, you should provide your specific statistical tests that answer the specific research questions you laid out above. In the same order. Using the same language/phrasing (or question itself).

For example, if you are running a comparison of means, using a t-test, produce either a simple table of the results with relevant information or bar graph, and include text summary on same slide.

Conclusions
Overarching findings/summary: What might be interesting to explore next, given what you found?

You'll prepare your research presentation as a slide deck and record a voiceover of your presentation.

Follow the APA format and the template you followed before in last briefs it is also attached. As for the presentation, follow the outline and the previous instructions in the previous email before this one.

The Template (Only for Brief 5)

Overview:
Provide an overview of the data being analyzed, including the overall sample size and any relevant information about when/how the data were collected.

Analysis One
Describe the analysis that you completed, what question(s) might be answered, and what data and methods were used.

Table/Figure #
Title
Table or Graph 2 - APA formatted

Then, write 2-3 sentences about your findings and their implications for practice or policy. If there is important context that may be relevant, describe it here. You can also connect to other findings from previous analysis, if useful. The default format for your findings would be paragraph(s), but if it is clearer or more impactful to format them as bullet points, that is acceptable also. Please still make your bullet points full sentences.

Analysis Two
Describe the second analysis that you completed, what question(s) might be answered, and what data and methods were used.

Table/Figure #
Title Table or Graph 2 - APA formatted

Follow here with 2-3 sentences about your second set of results and their implications for practice or policy. If there is important context that may be relevant, describe it here. You can also connect to other findings from previous analysis and should connect to the analysis above, if connected.
