Agree or Disagree?

We have heard it all before. Boys are more intelligent than girls. Boys are also more likely to succeed in STEM subjects rather than non-STEM. It is installed in us by society the minute we are born that males have greater strengths than females. They are stronger, more intelligent, and are capable of conquering almost anything. Froeb speaks on how boys tend to choose STEM subjects and girls cluster towards non-STEM subjects. Research shows that boys do not necessarily have an advantage in subjects like math and science; however these are the subjects that they perform better in. There is a misconception when people think that boys excel in the science, technology, engineering and math departments. According to Froeb, boys take the "do what you're good at" approach and decide to choose majors, careers, and interests in the STEM subjects. The big fallacy about women not being capable of dominating in the STEM fields is incorrect. In fact, studies show that girls are not only not at a "disadvantage" when it comes to their grades in STEM subjects in high school, they do better at them than boys" (Thorpe, 2018). Girls seem to dominate across the board, while boys are having difficulty excelling in the non-STEM subjects. Hence, giving them the urge to choose what they are good at leads them to the math and science areas. Girls can also suffer from anxiety which can affect their test scores. This may be because girls "absorb the message early that their brains aren't as "equipped" for maths and science, and so show more worry about their testing" (Thorpe, 2018). I believe that if it weren't because of society, gender equality would be practiced in our every day lives and in education.
