In the 1950s and 1960s, the increased use of patrol cars by the police, combined with the professionalism movement, caused a great disconnect between the police and their constituents. It was thought, in order to decrease potential conflicts of interest, the police shouldn’t get too close to the community, and the use of patrols amplified this concept. However, many community members began to feel the police were distant and uncaring.
In response to the negative perceptions of the police, many departments implemented Community Policing strategies in an attempt to improve community relations and increase community participation in crime control efforts. However, critics feel the cons of Community Policing still outweigh its pros.
Do you agree with the concept behind “Community Policing?” Tell us why or why not. What are some of the disadvantages to having the police get too “close’’ with the community? Are there any legitimate reasons for limiting the “community” involvement practices of the police? Try to employ concepts and terms from the entire course in your answer.
