The figure below illustrates an annular ring component with eight hollow cylindrical bosses. There are no hidden features on the reverse side. The outer and inner diameters of the ring are 200 and 160mm respectively. The main wall is 3mm thick, and the boss projections are 12mm outer diameter, 6mm inner diameter, and 30mm high. The material proposed for the design is high-density polyethylene, which is a very inexpensive polymer. However, the poor material mechanical properties give rise to the substantial wall thickness. Mold makers make $85/hr.

Using the spreadsheet from the in-class example problem as a starting point, calculate the cost of making this part in the following quantities:

1
10
100
1000
10000
100000.

How many parts should be made in each mold for each quantity in part a?

Plot the cost over quantity on a semi-log plot.

What trend do you notice?

What is causing this trend? (material, labor, tooling etc.)
