Physiological Changes in Septic Shock: Tachycardia and Hypotension: The body's response to infection often includes increased heart rate (tachycardia) and decreased blood pressure (hypotension) as the circulatory system tries to compensate for the infection and fluid loss, according to Medscape. Increased Respiratory Rate: The body may increase breathing rate (tachypnea) to try and compensate for the decreased oxygen delivery to tissues. Decreased Urine Output: Kidney function can be affected by sepsis, leading to decreased urine production. Altered Mental Status: Confusion, disorientation, or decreased level of consciousness can occur as a result of decreased blood flow and oxygen to the brain. Elevated Lactate Levels: High levels of lactate in the blood indicate tissue hypoxia and anaerobic metabolism, which is common in septic shock. Priority Interventions in Septic Shock: Broad-spectrum Antibiotics: Administering broad-spectrum antibiotics to cover a wide range of potential pathogens is a critical first step, according to the CDC. Fluid Resuscitation: Rapid intravenous fluid administration (typically crystalloids) is essential to restore circulating volume and improve tissue perfusion. Obtaining Cultures: Blood, urine, and other relevant cultures should be obtained before starting antibiotics to help guide targeted antibiotic therapy once the pathogen is identified.
