Q.1 A 2m long cantilever beam steel beam subjected to a system of force is shown in figure 1. The force acts at mid height of the beam and is inclined at an angle 300 to vertical as shown. The beam is fabricated by welding of two steel plates (see figure). Determine the normal stress σw acting perpendicular to the line of weld and shear stress τw parallel to the weld at point C. Note: C lies on the intersection of weld and centroidal axis of the beam.

Q2. The cantilever column of rectangular cross-section shown in figure 2 (next page) is subjected to wind pressure of intensity w and compressive force F. A rectangular strain rosette located at a surface point Q is positioned on the centroidal axis 2m downwards from the free end. The rosette recorded the following strain readings. Calculate the direct stress and the shear stress at point Q in the horizontal plane and hence the compressive force F and the wind pressure w. Assume E=31 ,000 MPa and ν=0.2 εa=-222x10-6 , εb=-213x10-6 , εc=45x10-6 Where gauges a, b and c are in line with, at 450 to and perpendicular to the centroidal axis of the column, respectively.
