Task: Data analysis task
Word count: 500 words
Description of the task: You will be provided a dataset and a research question a week in advance of the task. Using this, you will explore and analyse the data. You will need Excel for performing statistical analysis. The written work will be based on your analysis. You will be required to
Present the data addressing the research question using an appropriate visual tool ( eg, bar graph, box plot, table etc) Hire Online Assignment help service for completing assignment!
Provide a brief description of your results
Explain the rationale of the choice of any statistical test adapted
How can I prepare for this task? In the first six weeks, we have sessions that introduce core concepts and theory behind how data is analysed.
Task 1: Written proposal task
1. Word count: 1500 words
2. Description of the task: You will be expected to write a proposal for the potential research project that you will be conducting next term.
3. Feedback: You have the opportunity to submit a draft of your proposal for feedback from your supervisor. The draft deadline is 3rd April. Any submissions following this deadline will not be entertained by the supervisor and feedback will be at the discretion of the supervisor.
4. Structure of the proposal: The proposal should be structured under specific headings. You should use the template provided on moodle to write your proposal.
Any submission which is not in the format of the template will not be accepted.
5. What should I write in each heading? In Appendix 1, you will find the guidance notes on what to include under each heading.
Task 2: Data analysis task
1. Word count: 500 words
2. Description of the task: You will be provided a dataset and a research question a week in advance of the task. Using this, you will explore and analyse the data. You will need Excel for performing statistical analysis. The written work will be based on your analysis. You will be required to
- Present the data addressing the research question using an appropriate visual tool( eg, bar graph, box plot, table etc)
- Provide a brief description of your results
- Explain the rationale of the choice of any statistical test adapted
3. How can I prepare for this task? In the first six weeks, we have sessions that introduce core concepts and theory behind how data is analysed. Following these sessions, you will have the opportunity to perform data analysis and develop graphs using MS Excel on 24th Feb, 4th March and 24th March
4. Do figures and figure footnotes count in the word count? No.
Workshop on using Graphpad prism for the presentation and analysis of experimental data
Exercise 1:
A novel drug (Uelostatin) was tested for its cholesterol-lowering properties by carrying out an experiment using 10 volunteers. First, plasma cholesterol concentrations were measured to establish a pre-treatment value. The volunteers were then given the drug once daily for one month, after which time their plasma cholesterol concentrations were again measured. The cholesterol concentrations from the ten volunteers before and after the treatment are recorded below:

Using GraphPad Prism, perform the following:
(a) Display the data for pre-treatment and post-treatment values as a bar graph
(c) Select a suitable statistical test to assess whether the drug had a significant effect on plasma cholesterol levels.
Exercise 2:
Using experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) as an animal model of multiple sclerosis, a new drug (SO0030) has been tested. SO0030 is a new immunosuppressant drug, which is expected to reduce the incidence of neurological defects observed during the acute phase of EAE in male Wistar rats. SO0030 was administered orally for 7 days and on the 8th day following inoculation, the neurological scores were determined. Cyclosporin A was included as a positive control.
Table of neurological scores generated with SO0030 and cyclosporin A following the induction of EAE in Wistar rats:

Using GraphPad Prism, perform the following:
a) Plot the data using an appropriate graphical format
b) Select a suitable statistical test to assess whether SO0030 had an effect on EAE.
Exercise 3:
1. A 2cm strip of guinea-pig ileum was mounted in a 15ml organ bath. Additions of carbamylcholine chloride (CCh, MWt.=182.65) solution were made to the bath in an attempt to construct a log concentration response curve:
