Are modular organisms more or less likely to be part of the long-term community than are unitary organisms? Explain your thinking.

My thought process: Can grass plants be considered modular and redwood trees considered unitary? In this case, would it be reasonable to say that modular organisms are less likley to be a part of the long-term community because eventually space will become limited and more competitive organisms will be introduced and things like that?
