What are some strategies for paralegals to maintain professional boundaries with clients and avoid becoming too emotionally invested in their cases? I think it is important for paralegals to maintain a professional relationship and boundaries with clients. It is ok to empathetic and understanding, but I don't think they should share personal situations in an attempt to relate or connect with the client because that can cross the line into more of a friends category and give the client the wrong profession. So while it is important to be compassionate, a paralegal should be professional, they can suggest the client maybe talk to a therapist or family and friends if they need support beyond the legal services of the firm. How can paralegals effectively communicate with supervising attorneys and colleagues about ethical concerns or potential malpractice issues? They could approach the topic gently, maybe the attorney or colleague isn't aware of the ethical conflict, and the first step would be double check with them and see if that is what they intended. If so, then they should escalate it to whomever in the firm could address the ethical concerns.
