Assessment One: Essay Plan

Length: 1,000 words.

Task: You should present an essay plan for the question you intend to answer in Assessment Two: Essay. See that section for essay questions. The format of your essay plan should help you to develop your essay and so feel free to submit it in the format that best helps you. In whichever format you feel is best you should demonstrate the following:

• Knowledge of your subject
• Identification of relevant literature beyond that provided in the course outline and on study direct
• Developing an argument that responds to your question
• OPTIONAL: if you define your own question then you should explain and justify your choice.

The following is suggested as a format for your answer. You may use it as a template that your follow, but you may also adjust it as you see fit to as long as you provide the material as defined above.

Essay Plan Format (word lengths for individual sections are suggested)

Synopsis: A summary of the content of the projected essay. This should outline in a general way the argument being in made in response to the question chosen. (500 words)

Section Outlines: Break the essay into sections each of which addresses a particular part of your argument. Outline briefly the content of each section. How many sections you have will depend on the way you wish to argue. As a rough guide there would normally be 3-5 sections, excluding the introduction and conclusion. (1,000 words).

Additional literature and resources: Identify where you will gain the support for the arguments you are making. This will be heavily dependent on the kind of argument you are making. If you are making a mainly theoretical argument then additional literature would be predominantly relevant theoretical texts. If you are making a mainly empirical argument then additional literature would have to identify the sources of data for your claims. It is likely most essay will include some of both theoretical literature and empirical resources but it is not necessary. You should be aiming to identify 3-5 key groups of literature or empirical sources and in this section to briefly explain each group's relevance. (500 words)

Bibliography: A short bibliography should be relevant.

OPTIONAL: Explanation of essay question: If you choose your own essay question, you should include an explanation of why you have chosen that question. This explanation

should be separate section and should address two questions: Why is your question relevant to the module's topic? Why have you phrased the question in the way you have?

Assessment Two: Essay

Length: 3,500 word

Questions

Choose one of the following questions.

1 What is the economic role that users play in at least one of, and no more than three of, the following areas: search; social media; disintermediation; free digital economy; games.

2 Do digital industries depend on free labour? Exemplify your reasons in relation to at least one of the follow ing case studies: search; social media; disintermediation; free digital economy; games.

3 Critically discuss whether financial gain defines the nature of digital industries.

4 Define your own question. You are allowed to create your own question, this question must be used as a basis for Asssessment One in your essay plan. You must have proposed your question to the module convenor and received permission to use it as part of your preparation for the Assessment One Essay Plan.
