A student hypothesized that anteaters had a smaller thermal neutral zone than bears. She measured oxygen consumption and body temperature of anteaters and bears at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40oC. Sketch the graphs of VO2 and body temperature that support the hypothesis. Assume the following:

  • their body temperature was 35oC
  • all animals were approximately the same mass,
  • the middle of their thermal neutral zone was 25oC
  • basal metabolic rate of anteaters was 3 ml O2/hr and the basal metabolic rate of bears was 4 ml O2/hr
