Wilson is a 31-year-old wife and mother who wants to start her own company. She has no previous business experience but has an idea for marketing an animal-grooming service, with an approach similar to that used for pizza delivery. When a customer calls, she will arrive in a van in less than 30 minutes and will provide the grooming service. Many of her friends think the idea has promise but dismiss her efforts to seriously discuss the venture. However, Wilson is not discouraged; she plans to purchase the van and the necessary grooming equipment.

Please respond to the following questions:

1. What target market or markets can you identify for Wilson ? How could she forecast sales for her service in each market?

2. What advantage does her business have over existing grooming businesses?

3. What business name and promotional strategy would you suggest that Wilson use?

4. how do we know this mobile time-sensitive business model works for animal grooming? It's not like Pizza and Subs delivery (to your door in 30 mins or less), or is it? Does the fact that Mary has "no previous business experience" (according to the case) pose a serious negative for you? We also don't know if she has any prior experience with dealing with pets/animals, in general. Can heart/desire alone be enough to succeed, or could she be setting herself up for failure without a well-executed business plan and the proper experience to pull this off?

5.Specifically, how might she go about doing some market research to compile data about possible sales for her services? Could she visit other stationary groomers, or deduce demand by understanding the sales volume of existing competitors, etc?

Another issue is that Mary Wilson has no business experience and wants to start a venture in which she has no access to "primary" data... So is it wise for her to attempt this without understanding what kind of return (or revenue) she can get for her effort...? What about secondary data, anything apart from tracking other groomers might be useful to help her forecast...?
