A new Nurse intern has been working non-stop for 15 hrs in the ER. A patient was showing serious signs of dehydration. The Nurse took action without checking with the attending physician and administered 1 liter of sterile distilled water intravenously (I-V)
A few hours later , the patient was in worse condition. The resident physician drew blood from the patient and noticed , after centrifugation of the blood sample, that the top plasma layer was pink instead of opaque white.
Questions :
2. The osmolority of blood is actually the osmolarity of plasma. If you know that plasma Osmolarity is 300 milliOsmolar, and the Nurse added 1 Liter of distilled water to the blood, what would the osmolarity of the plasma be after the infusion ? Show your reasoning or calculations.( assume the 1 Liter added to stay within the blood circulation....and is thus added to the plasma of the blood). (Hint : think what mOsmolarity means... then first calculate the total osmolarity of plasma ( you need answers to previous question) and eventually re-calculate mOsmolarity after addition of 1 liter water to the plasma).4. Finally, if nothing is done, the condition of this patient will become worse. In fact, this patient may go into renal shock. Explain what renal shock refers to and can you provide an explanation why this may happen in this case ?What would you suggest to do to prevent more damage ?(answer may become available when you research the next question
After some week's plants that were transplanted into nonsterile soil exhibited a much higher growth rate compared to the plants transplanted into sterile soil. What would be the most likely explanation for this result.
In order to map the distance between two linked genes, CC DD individuals were crossed to cc dd individuals. The F1 generation was then testcrossed to cc dd individuals.
What advantage will heterozygotes have over the homozygotes. Why selection inevitably favors any gene that is good at getting into the next generation, regardless of whether that gene helps or hurts the ecosystem, the species, the group, or even the ..
What are the roles of COPI vesicles for transporting proteins between Golgi cisternae. How does a new Golgi cisterna form in the cis side from COPII vesicles.
Consider that, in the hypothetical study given in the table below, cases underestimated their exposure and, as a result, 20% of exposed cases were falsely classified as unexposed.
Consider a specific codon in the genetic code that normally codes for an amino acid. Change the wobble position nucleotide to a different purine and the result is a stop codon.
Thiol proteases are a widely distributed group of proteases with a mechanism somewhat similar to that of the serine proteases (the family of enzymes which includes chymotrypsin).

What aspects of social and work environment in a college cafeteria will be of particular interest to a sociologist since of his or her sociological imagination.
Explain how this could be considered a negative feedback mechanism. The amino acid residues at the active site are highly hydrophobic. In designing a drug that would bind to the active site and jam it, researchers must use which type of molecule.
explain why very tightbinding of a substrate to an enzyme is not desirable for enzyme catalysis, whereas tight binding of the transition state is desirable.
Explain what type of training is most beneficial for ice skating and why. Are there adverse side-effects on the body from such long-term and/or intense training?
