Question
Explain the importance of the main characteristics of the Organizational Development (OD) approach to change. Describe the role of an OD change practitioner within an organization. Within an organization, whom do you feel would be the most appropriate choice to be the change practitioner and why?
Organizational Development (OD) is vital due to its ability to embody a cohesive set of values that extend beyond mere structural organization. My understanding of its significance was profoundly influenced by reading "The Dream Manager," a narrative centered on a fictional janitorial firm struggling with employee retention. This book epitomizes the essence of OD. In response to the high turnover challenge, the position of Dream Manager (an OD Practitioner) was established, outlining a transformative roadmap for the organization. Its goal was to reverse the trend from high turnover to low turnover, ultimately promotng a workplace culture where the janitorial company becomes one of the best places to work.
The OD approach emphasizes a holistic change, considering not just structural alterations but also the organization's culture, values, and people. This approach ensures that change initiatives are sustainable and have a lasting impact. Secondly, OD promotes collaboration and engagement at all levels, promoting a sense of ownership among employees. It also emphasizes continuous learning and adaptation, aligning the organization with evolving external and internal conditions. Lastly, and my favorite, OD focuses on improving the overall well-being of employees, leading to increased job satisfaction, productivity, and retention, which are pivotal for organizational success.
Does the response answer the inital question, how does it and how can you make the response better? Give examples.
