Question

Provide examples of populations that are not within their optimal population density. Classify each population of animals as overpopulated or underpopulated. Overpopulated Underpopulated Three-quarters of a population of prairie dogs is lost to flooding. The resulting population experiences inbreeding depression. After hunting reduces the population density, wolves are unable to find mates due to a reduction in population caused by hunting. Loss of tropical forest to farming results in more territorial disputes between mountain gorilla silverback males. Answer Bank High reproductive rate in one year leads to a very large increase in a lemming population. The following year many lemmings starve to death due to the depletion of forage plants. Poaching of elephants for ivory destroys the social interaction of a herd, increasing the likelihood of predation on calves. Lack of predators allows elk populations to increase, resulting in an epidemic of chronic wasting disease.
