Question
A 10-year-old male presents to the pediatrician's office with his mom to discuss his ongoing issues with diarrhea and poor growth. The patient has been experiencing these symptoms over the past 6 months. At first, it was thought to be anxiety or stress because his family had moved about a year ago. However, after counseling and other stress management techniques his symptoms continue. His height and weight percentiles have both dropped on the growth charts and his mom is very concerned. The doctor asks a series of questions and the patient denies, fever, chills, nausea, or vomiting. The patient also denies any blood in his stool or abdominal pain (only cramping prior to loose stools). His mom mentions to the doctor his symptoms are worse after eating bread and other wheat products and wonders if that is playing a role in his symptoms. The doctor decides to order some labs and diagnostics and after reviewing the results determines the cause of the patient's symptoms.
