Case: Mr Halo, a 40-year-old male, was admitted to hospital for a small surgical procedure. He has a history of cardiac complications and high alcohol consumption while in hospital, Mr Halo had a stroke, leaving him weak and causing dysphagia (difficulty swallowing). He has been transferred for further management to the stroke unit where you are on your clinical placement. Mr Halo is now designated as nothing/nil by mouth (NBM) due to his dysphagia and has trouble with secretions. Mr Halo is alert and oriented, but speech and sensory motor functions are not smooth and symmetric. Currently he is being fed Ensure Plus via a feeding tube. A nutrition consult has been ordered as Mr Halo is unable to walk and has difficulty talking. He requires total care for bathing, toileting, dressing, and feeding. At least two nurses or nurse aides are required to move him. He is occasionally incontinent. After the physio session, the physiotherapist reveals that Mr Halo has a broken skin at the coccyx region (the base of his spinal column) and it appears to be yellow inside (unstageable pressure injury, depth unknown). Your preceptor assesses the patient and discusses a plan with you to promote the healing of pressure injuries. As part of your clinical placement, your learning goals include the delivery of an evidence-based educational poster presentation. You would like to take this opportunity to complete a poster presentation that creates awareness of pressure injuries.
