At the most basic level, nursing sensitive indicators aim to determine whether nurses have an impact on their patients. Just as importantly, however, these indicators determine what that impact looks like and whether it delivers a net positive or negative for both individual patients and the community at large.

Some measures are having the bed locked in the lowest position, call light at easy reach, and bed alarm make it easier to keep patients from falling. Having signs posted outside the patient's room alerting others that the patient is at high risk for falls and a fall risk armband are some different interventions that have been developed to help prevent falls in the elderly. However, prevention of falls includes more of that. Rehab can include different exercises, which may increase muscle strength. Their pharmacy recommends reviewing the list of medications that can affect the patient. Suppose a patient's risk of falling is very to extremely high. In that case, the nurse in charge of the patient must notify the nurse supervisor, the medical provider, the physical therapist, and the fall risk committee. The nurse's responsibility is to assess the patient, inform the MD, supervisor, patient family, and follow facility policy and procedure if there is a fall in the event (Lee, A., Lee, K., 2013). Since a patient with Alzheimer's disease may need more attention, the nurse also needs to properly allocate time for this patient.
