The Boys & Girls Club of America is a Non-governmental Organization that was originally founded in Hartford, Connecticut in 1860 by Mary Goodwin, Alice Goodwin as well as Elizabeth Hammersley. The three women organized the first club with intentions to provide local boys with a positive alternative to wandering the streets. Since then, the clubs have continued to expand across the country, and now serve young women as well as men. Their vision is to "provide a world-class Club Experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who enters our doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle" (bgca.org). I chose this nonprofit organization because it is non-governmental organization and aligned with my interests with childcare and education. The Boys & Girls Club offers a variety of different programs such as sports/recreation, education, arts, health/wellness and workforce readiness. Based on the NGO lecture, I believe their orientation would fall under not just one but two categories: welfare and development. The Boys & Girls Club is open to all youth. Their website states, "Boys & Girls Clubs of America supports all youth and teens - of every race, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, ability, socio-economic status, and religion - in reaching their full potential" (bgca.org). This is a membership-based organization, and based on the information I found on their official website I believe that it would be considered self-benefiting.
