You are studying a new population of stem cells you have found in lung epithelium. You find there is one novel trascription factor and one novel signaling molecule that are absolutely required for maintenance of the stem cell population but neither is express by the stem cells although they are both found in different populations of cells near the stem cells. What is an explanation for this expression patteren and activity requirement?
