Mechanical Systems Design

Your projects aim to implement heat pumps (assisted by solar energy) for any applications (residential or commercial buildings or industrial applications). The choice for the type of heat pump and the place of applications is very wide open. If you decide to select any rural small businesses and agricultural entities in Alabama (please see the project brief for ME 516 above), you will have some extra bonus points (5).
The choice for types of heat pumps is very open (air source, ground source, etc.)

You need to do an evaluation of the current energy use for the place where you are going to implement the heat pump and 2) technical assessment for implementation of heat pump.

You can do the project individually or in groups of up to 5 students per group.

The format of the report will be as follows:

Title Page (including name, date, title of project)
• Summary table
• Information about the client (type of business and location)
• Evaluation of current energy system
• Calculations on implementation of heat pump assisted by solar energy
• Conclusions

What you need to for the projects -undergraduate students :

1. You need to start from annual electricity bill of any potential businesses at any locations

2. In the electricity bills you need to know their energy usage in kWh

3. How much they pay?

4. Actual address (important for calculations of solar energy for example) - this is if you decide to go for a small business in rural area. You need to tell the clients that they will receive a report

5. You need to analyze the electricity bill

6. Doing the recommendations for heat pump powered by solar panels
