Instructions
Make a group of no more than seven members. You must sign a group contract during the first two sessions of the module. (Refer VU collaborate for group contract template). Team disputes will be handled based on the signed contract. Any complaints made during 2 days before the submission date of the assignment would be considered invalid.
In groups you are required to research under one of the following types of buildings.
Select a commercial building of your choice from the below list (No two groups can choose same type of building. The selection would be on first come first serve basis)
• Apartment complex
• Office Building
• Restaurant
• Student hostel building
• Hospital building
Assume that your team, as a consultant group have a client seeking to construct the building you chose above. Due to lack of knowledge he has on the compliance requirements and the construction industry, he had hired your team to assist him with the decision-making process. Your client requires a report from you outlining all the information that he must know when constructing the building including compliance requirements. You must include all the information that you might think would be relevant during the decision-making process in your report. (Use of NCC Volume 03 is not required)
At the end of this module, you are required to create a Project Report of at least 3000 (+/- 100) words and a 10-minute presentation to be presented to class (your client).
In your report you must,
Define the type of occupancy, expected number of occupants, location and all other relevant building information to interpret your case. You are free to do reasonable assumptions to justify your decisions and concerns related to the chosen building.
Your project report should contain but not limited to;
• The class of your chosen building
• Building information
• Required Permits and the process of obtaining them
• Important factors to be taken into consideration in terms of
» Structure
» Fire Safety
» Energy Efficiency
» Access and Egress
» Services and Equipment
» Health and Amenity; and
» Ancillary provisions
Design calculations are not required. However, your team is expected to clearly identify the building components that require special attention and what are the provisions allowed in the NCC. Further, you are required to refer relevant documents, standards, council websites for each category under consideration to construct a safe and sound building.
Further, the report should be concluded outlining the importance of using construction codes and standards for building requirements and the help you obtained from them.
The report will be evaluated for plagiarism, so direct inclusion of content out of reference material is forbidden. No screenshots can be incorporated unless only for figures.
