The Sunnyvale Police Department uses the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The police department has posted citywide crime reports along with monthly crime reports. Based on what I learned this week, issues with reliability and validity are that there may be inconsistencies in the "social production of data". Maxfield and Babbie (2018) refer to the social production of data as "data reflecting organizational processes and decisions". Issues may be failing to record minor infractions due to a lack of attention, failing to track criminal activity patterns, and the complexity of quantifying data. From my perspective, I believe that this type of data is beneficial for the Sunnyvale Police Department because it allows for transparency and social organization between law enforcement and civilians. City community members can stay current on recent and past crime statistics. Lastly, this can provide greater information to specific crime problems and allows for further analytic flexibility (NIBRS).
