Question: The concerns of those polled by AARP could be met if the NFCSP had a bigger budget. Since NFCSP is administered through each state, exploratory committees should be deployed to assess each state's unique needs and how a more comprehensive array of grants might help incentivize each state to meet the growing demand for caregiver support and services. These exploratory committees can and should partner with existing agencies that have done a lot of research into caregiver support, like the Alzheimer Association. In 2017, the Alzheimer's Association compiled a comprehensive list of recommendations to assist unpaid caregivers in over 40 states. Additionally, future lawmakers seeking office should make supporting family caregivers a cornerstone of their campaign platform, given that most voters are looking for candidates who will propose expanding caregiver supports and services (AARP, 2023). The time to act is now. The National Family Caregivers Support Program, the only federally funded program of its kind (Doty and Spillman, 2015), is vital to the nation's health, and the program must be adequately funded to continue providing much-needed support to family caregivers.
