1. Molecular Mechanisms Linking Obesity and Cancer:

Using the Calle and Kaaks review as a starting point, discuss one hypothesis connecting obesity and cancer (pick one that intrigues you!). Several hypotheses exist and vary depending on the type of cancer involved. In your presentation/paper, discuss a molecular pathway linking obesity and cancer (be mindful of signaling pathways we learned about in this unit) and the proposed mechanism leading to the development of cancer based on recent studies.

2. Targeting Obesity Related Cancers:

Recent studies (and several clinical trials) have shown that drugs that are used to treat Type II Diabetes (i.e. metformin) are also effective against cancer. In the context of specific molecular pathways, discuss one hypothesis explaining the anti-tumorigenic effects of metformin (or another related drug). Be sure to address the targeted pathway(s) and particular cancer(s) involved. If clinical data is available, include this as support for your hypothesis. Refer to the Calle and Kaaks review as a starting point.
