Question

Kristen is a 35-year-old woman who experiences mobility challenges due to a progressive chronic condition. She relies on a wheelchair for mobility and needs assistance with daily living activities such as bathing and dressing. Recently, she has been prescribed a new medication to help manage symptoms she is currently experiencing. However, Kirsten has learned that this medication was tested on animals, and she has ethical objections to its use. She has expressed her concerns to her healthcare providers, who have explained that there are no suitable synthetic alternate medications available and that most medications have relied on animal testing at some stage. This does not change her mind and she refuses treatment. Kirsten's family is concerned about the legal and ethical implications if Kristen continues to refuse the medication and treatment. What is the ethical dilemma in this situation?
