Question

The Heart Station's role in Exercise 14.8 is to perform a stress test on the patient via treadmill exercise testing or by administering a pharmacologic agent that mimics exercise stress. After the patient enters one of the three stress labs, a nurse practitioner or a physician obtains the patient's medical history, performs a resting EKG, takes blood pressures, and then performs the stress test. The Heart Station typically operates Monday through Friday, 8: 00 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m. It typically assigns one or two nurse practitioners or one NP and one cardiology fellow to cover the stress labs. Although each of the three stress labs is capable of handling two patients per hour, the throughput is limited by the number of available personnel. One NP or fellow can typically stress test 1.75 patients per hour. Patient arrival rate per stress lab is estimated at 2.9 per hour. Costs: Idle stress lab: $ 300 per hour Stress lab busy server: $ 300 Stress lab customer being served: $ 900 Stress lab customer waiting: $ 900 Using the Excel queuing template, perform a queuing analysis for stress testing in the Heart Station's stress labs to determine the optimal server capacity.
