Cell Phones:The Effects of Cell Phones on Distracted DrivingE. Crawford

Abstract

Distracted driving is becoming a dangerous safety epidemic and heightened concern among law enforcement and legislation. This study will examine the trends in and around the use of cell phones and other electronic devices as a result of distracted drivers in the United States.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines distracted driving as evidenced by, "any activity that could divert a person's attention away from the primary task of driving. All distractions endanger driver, passenger, and bystander safety. These types of distractions include: texting, Using a cell phone or smartphone, eating and drinking, talking to passengers, grooming, reading [includes maps], using a navigation system, watching a video, adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3 player. But, because text messaging requires visual, manual, and cognitive attention from the driver, it is by far the most alarming distraction." The national public appears to be aware that these dangerous and illegal behaviors have resulted in fatal or near-fatal crashes and continue to use their cell phone while driving regardless of their knowledge to the safety risks. Distraction of other's who share the road such as pedestrians and cyclists are also an important concern as a result of distracted drivers.

The Effects of Cell Phones on Distracted Driving

In today's society most of us have learned that multitasking has become an essential part of our daily lives. Each morning people wake up and immediately reach for their cell phone to check emails, respond to text messages, search the weather app to determine appropriate attire and may be a little social networking on Facebook or Twitter, all of these different tasks while trying to prepare for a busy day. Sometimes people feel that driving to their destination is an opportunity to complete more tasks, maybe its opportunity to finish morning breakfast, make some phone calls, floss their teeth, apply make-up, and etc.  However, when demonstrating divided attention between the road and the tasks at hand, this becomes a game of Russian roulette with people's lives. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), every year nearly 1.25 million people die and 20- 50 million are injured as a result of road traffic crashes. The WHO also predicts that without action trends between now and the year 2030, road traffic injuries will rise to the seventh leading global cause of death.

When was the last time you saw someone driving and looking at their cell phone or another type of electronic device? When was the last time you received a text message or had a conversation on your cell phone? When was the last time you said, "I don't remember driving here", those missing time moments that you went from point A to point B but, don't remember anything in between. When operating a vehicle we require four of our traditional senses and the fifth sense (taste) will be replaced with observation, for safe driving while operating a vehicle
