Learning Outcome 2: Critically evaluate theoretical and methodological approaches to qualitative research
Learning Outcome 3: Critically analyse qualitative data collection techniques
Learning Outcome 4: Rationalise cultural and ethical considerations for qualitative research
Learning Outcome 4: Identify sampling techniques, bias, and rigour as they apply to qualitative research
Assessment Task
This assessment requires you to complete the following tasks:
Develop a methods paper for you chosen qualitative method
Include research questions, research objective, data collection, sample, sampling, data management, data analysis, details of how the findings will be reported.
Context
Qualitative researchers, perform data collection to explore the answers to research questions using the appropriate methodologies and methods. Qualitative data can be collected by different methods, such as interviews, focus groups, observations and textual and visual analyses. After collecting the data, the information needs to be analysed by adopting different approaches (e.g., by reading through the transcripts, analysing the content and developing themes, codes and categories). Data analyses help researchers to convert substantial amounts of data into a manageable format without losing its meaning. The results of the analysis are considered the ‘findings' of the research. It is important to communicate and disseminate the information found through this process.
In this assessment, you are required to construct a paper supporting and describing your choices of data collection, analysis and transcription and management of the research design. Ideally you will use the verbal protocol developed in assessment 2
Instructions
Review the methodology and methods that you described in Assessment 2.
Report the research question(s) and methods stated in Assessment 2
Clearly develop the reasoning for the method choice, include the verbal protocol
Discuss the sample and sampling and offer justification
Develop the questions related to your research project and use open-ended questions to gain a more comprehensive view of the topic being studied. Consider qualitative questions techniques such as storytelling, semiotics, document analysis and probing.
Document on how the interviews will be transcribed, stored and analysed,
Acknowledge ethical considerations such as consent requirements and ethics.
Decide which approach and technique are most suitable for the data analysis , include discussion on thematic analysis, quoting and any other techniques that may be relevant.
Propose any limitations and future activities required.
