Health News Guidelines
Please find a fairly recent health or medicine related news article from a reputable news source to share with the class. You will post the link to this article along with at least 500 words of your own commentary on the article (explained below) to the "Health News / Discussion" section of the course BlackBoard site.
Your 500-word commentary should not be a summary of the article; your peers will be expected to read it and gather the information themselves. Rather, spend this time addressing the following question:
1. Beyond the basic medical facts, what might this news mean for society more broadly?
2. What questions do you feel remain about this topic after reading the news article?
3. What other health trends, events, news, debates, etc. does this remind you?
For example (using a fake, non-existent news story): researchers have discovered that countries with very few services for autistic people have 50% fewer cases of autism. I could, with at least 500 words, discuss these points: 1.) This might mean that we, in the US, are over-diagnosing autism to justify all of our treatment options rather than catering treatment options to care for the truly autistic. Maybe our medical industry is "inventing" disabilities - that could affect more than just this particular case; 2.) Did the researchers know how each country was defining autism? Maybe "autism" means different things in different places, and so in some countries the rates only seem lower; 3.) This reminds me of other mental health issues like ADHD, which is fairly common in the US, but extremely rare to see reported in many non-Western countries.
